My philosophy of education
With five solo exhibitions, many group shows and multiple sales of my artwork, I already knew how to be an artist. What I desired was to be a great teacher. This is something that is not taught in MFA programs. Instead of the traditional MFA, I recently went back to school and earned my Masters Degree in Education at one of the top rated education schools in the country. This has prepared me immeasurably better to serve as a cognitive guide to my art students. My personal philosophy of education has its basis in the Humanics philosophy of “spirit, mind, and body,” embraced by my alma-mater, Springfield College, and in Elliot Eisner’s philosophy of “discipline based art education:" art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.
My background as a working artist, a graphic designer, art director, sales professional, product manager, and marketing manager for international companies has provided me with a wealth of real world experience and a broad perspective. I don't just teach art - I teach students. My goal is the utmost development of the individual personality.
Although I can teach technique, I believe that it is much more valuable for the student to discover their own technique, the one best suited for their own self expression. As a teacher my role is not to be a "sage on a stage," but rather a "guide by your side." Lessons in fundamentals are presented with the intent of encouraging the students to construct their own knowledge based on a strong foundation.
My story is one of an artist compelled by fiscal necessity to become a businessperson. Deep reflection on what was truly meaningful in life led to my decision to make a purposeful career change. I concluded that the best way for me to help make the world a better place is through teaching.
